Samba is an implementation of the SMB/CIFS protocol for Unix systems, providing support for cross-platform file and printer sharing with Microsoft Windows, OS X, and other Unix systems. Samba can also function as an NT4-style domain controller, and can integrate with both NT4 domains and Active Directory realms as a member server. This package provides the components necessary to use Samba as a stand-alone file and print server. For use in an NT4 domain or Active Directory realm, you will also need the winbind package. This package is not required for connecting to existing SMB/CIFS servers (see smbclient) or for mounting remote filesystems (see smbfs).
This is the portable version of OpenSSH, a free implementation of the Secure Shell protocol as specified by the IETF secsh working group. SSH (Secure Shell) is a program for logging into a remote machine and for executing commands on a remote machine. It provides secure encrypted communications between two untrusted hosts over an insecure network. X11 connections and arbitrary TCP/IP ports can also be forwarded over the secure channel. It is intended as a replacement for rlogin, rsh and rcp, and can be used to provide applications with a secure communication channel. This package provides the sshd server. In some countries it may be illegal to use any encryption at all without a special permit.

Postfix is Wietse Venema's mail transport agent that started life as an alternative to the widely-used Sendmail program. Postfix attempts to be fast, easy to administer, and secure, while at the same time being sendmail compatible enough to not upset existing users. Thus, the outside has a sendmail-ish flavor, but the inside is completely different.
Ubuntu's mail stack provides fully operational mail server with safe defaults and additional options. Out of the box it supports IMAP, POP3 and SMTP services with SASL authentication and Maildir as default storage engine. This package contains configuration file for dovecot.

Nagios is a monitoring and management system for hosts, services and networks.

This package includes a wide range of plugins capable of extracting common values such as cpu usage, network usage, load average, and so on. Creating your own plugins which are capable of extracting other system-specific values is very easy, and is often done in a matter of minutes. You can also create plugins which relay information from other devices in your network that can't run Munin, such as a switch or a server running another operating system, by using SNMP or similar technology.
VLC provides a streaming server that can read media streams and multicast them through the network to other clients, or serves them through HTTP. VLC has support for on-the-fly transcoding of audio and video formats, either for broadcasting purposes or for movie format transformations. Support for most output methods is provided by this package, but features can be added by installing additional audio plugins (vlc-plugin-esd, vlc-plugin-sdl) or video plugins (vlc-plugin-sdl, vlc-plugin-ggi, vlc-plugin-svgalib).
